The team at Adventure China went through and found the ones we get asked the most.
Have a read through and learn all about the program...
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The 2019 summer season price is £449.
This includes your return flights to China, your medical insurance, Visa and placement.
Find out more about our pricing.
DO I NEED TO SPEAK CHINESE TO APPLY FOR THIS PROGRAM?
The program is completely in English so you don’t need to know any Chinese before heading out to camp.
You’ll also be paired up with a local Chinese counsellor who will be an English student at Qingdao university volunteering at camp that can help with any translation issues.
HOW DO I APPLY FOR A VISA?
The visa process is quite simple and doesn’t require an interview. The paperwork is available online and once you’ve completed the basic questions and attached an ID photo, you’ll need to drop it off at the Chinese consulate in Manchester and pick it up a few days later.
HOW MUCH DOES THE VISA COST?
The visa usually costs around £150. The consulates are in Edinburgh, Manchester and London so you would need to consider the cost of travel to drop off your visa application and pick it up in a few days' time.
WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM FEE?
The £449 program fee covers...
- the cost of your 8 week placement at camp
- return flights
- airport pick up/drop off in China
- food and accommodation whilst at camp
- preparation days
WHAT WILL I BE DOING?
As a general counsellor, you will be living in a cabin with a local counsellor and together you’ll be responsible for a group of campers. From getting the campers up in the mornings to assisting in a wide range of activities throughout the day, your role is to make sure the kids are having an amazing summer in a safe learning environment.
WHO WILL I BE WORKING WITH?
You will be part of a team of international counsellors who are mostly made up of American, British and Irish staff. You will also be paired with a local counsellor, who are usually volunteers studying English at the local university, and they will help with translation issues.
WHERE ARE THE CAMPS LOCATED?
We work with lots of different camps all over China. China is an amazing country and each province offers something unique and individual. Our main camps can be found in Beijing, Qingdao, Inner Mongolia and Shanghai.
CAN I TRAVEL AFTER CAMP?
As your visa will last 90 days from the date of entry into China, you will have around 4 weeks to travel after your camp placement finishes. We can provide plenty of travel advice to help you plan the rest of your time in China.
WHERE WILL I BE STAYING AT CAMP?
You will be staying in wooden cabins with a group of about 10 campers. There is a private room provided with bunk beds for the international and local counsellor. The cabins are dotted around the camp and have a bathroom with a sink and toilet.
CAN THE CHILDREN SPEAK ENGLISH?
The campers will have varying degrees of English ability but they will usually all be able to follow at least basic instructions in English. The local counsellors will also help with any language issues and can give instructions in Chinese.
DO I HAVE TO BE A STUDENT TO APPLY FOR THIS PROGRAM?
You don’t have to be a student to be accepted on to the program but you do have to be aged 18-30 when you start your placement.
IS THIS JUST AMERICAN SUMMER CAMP IN CHINA?
The camps that we work with follow the American style of summer camp and were set up by a vastly experienced American camp director. However, this is American summer camp ‘with Chinese characteristics’. You’ll be able to immerse yourself in Chinese culture whilst roasting marshmallows on the campfire!
